NITRIDING

VACUUM

Gas nitriding is a surface hardening process, where nitrogen is added to the surface of steel parts using dissociated ammonia as the source. Gas nitriding develops a very hard case in a component at relatively low temperature, without the need for quenching.

Carburizing, also referred to as Case Hardening, is a heat treatment process that produces a surface which is resistant to wear, while maintaining toughness and strength of the core. This treatment is applied to low carbon steel parts after machining, as well as high alloy steel bearings, gears, and other components.

Elmira Heat Treating has recently expanded and upgraded our plant to 80,000 square feet. The reason is very simple, to give you the customer, the very best heat treating facility possible. Since our founding in 1962 we have strived to give our customers one very important item QUALITY. At Elmira Heat Treating we are a service organization and we firmly believe that the best service we can do for you is to give you a QUALITY product that you can trust.

At Elmira Heat Treating, QUALITY starts the minute your job comes in the door and never lets up until the job is complete. We believe that QUALITY must be processed into the work, therefore our quality control emphasis is on the process as well as inspection.

At Elmira Heat Treating our facilities are operated by a team of individuals with experience spanning over 100 years. This teamwork carries customer products through all operations assuring a QUALITY product.

Elmira Heat Treating also provides consulting services to our customers. Whether it be for a unique heat treating requirement or in the design of a new product, consultation with our metallurgist has often resulted in lower manufacturing cost, lower heat treating cost and improved product reliability.

To better serve our customers we are currently  ISO 9001-2015.

Hardening involves heating of steel, keeping it at an appropriate temperature until all pearlite is transformed into austenite, and then quenching it rapidly in water or oil. The temperature at which austentizing rapidly takes place depends upon the carbon content in the steel used. The heating time should be increased ensuring that the core will also be fully transformed into austenite.

WELCOME

A vacuum is a type of furnace in which the product in the furnace is surrounded by a vacuum during processing. The absence of air or other gases prevents oxidation, heat loss from the product through convection, and removes a source of contamination. This enables the furnace to heat materials (typically metals and ceramics) to temperatures as high as 3,000 °C (5,432 °F)
